Victorian publication The Illustrated Police News infamously thrilled the public with gruesome pictures and melodramatic headlines. Crude content describing lewd and terrible crimes in great detail, with conjured images to match, meant the publication acquired a sensationalist reputation not unlike tabloids of today. The Police News revelled in reporting every gory detail of Jack the Ripper's murders, and inducing paranoia with headlines including "Boys Murder Their Mother. Revolting Crime at Plaistow- Shocking Details" and "Horrible Discovery of Human Remains at Rainham." Linda Stratmann takes the opportunity to delve deeper into the crimes themselves, and to defend the publication's reputation, insisting it was a landmark in journalism.
Linda Stratmann
Linda Stratmann is a British author specializing in historical true crime, biography, and crime fiction. Stratmann's fascination with true crime has been a life-long preoccupation, prompting studies in psychology, careers in medicine and the civil service, and arguably her black belt in aikido. While Stratmann has penned eleven nonfiction books on the topic of historical crime, she has also recently experimented with fictional writing in a similar vein.
